	On examining the list of AC numbers, it would appear that this series starts in circa 1959. From 1959 the companies files start appearing in 'struck off' order, whereas before this they are in original company order. This would appear to show that in 1959 all the previously struck off companies were retrospectively given AC numbers, hence the discrepancy between the series dates and the holdings dates.

	This series contains files about particular companies registered under the Joint Stock Companies Act 1862 and its successors. The companies were registered in the Otago district, but have ceased to operate. When a company ceased to operate or became insolvent, it was ‘struck off’ the companies register and the company was dissolved. This action was published in The New Zealand Gazette.

	Company files were given a number when they were first registered (known as the original company number). Circa 1959, all struck off companies were arranged into a new sequence using a second number (known as an Archives Company [AC] number).

	The files may contain the following material:

	- Documents relating to a company’s initial registration

	- Memorandum of association detailing the purposes/objects of the business

	- Articles of association detailing company shares, directors, meetings, etc.

	- Annual returns
