            [history] =>

This series is the collection extracted from the holdings of New Zealand Post Archives, which was part of the Post Office Museum and Archives. There are a number of transfers from NZ Post Office [NZPO] since 1987 when NZPO split into Telecom, NZ Post and Post Bank.

The records were physically stored and managed within more or less loosely defined archival series. There have been several archivists involved with the NZ Post Archives holdings over time, and each had developed their own systems and series.

There is a large amount of photographic material within this collection. There is a numbered sequence of photographic positives and a numbered sequence of negatives; they appear to relate to each other. In addition, there are also photograph albums, donated photo collections and loose photographs. Not all the photographs were originally created by NZPO, some were copies from other photographic collections. Some photographs have no title on them.

The ‘Places Series’
There is a small sub-set of photographic negatives referred to as the ‘Places Series’ that has been listed to item level. This series of negatives is organised alphabetically by the town or City location name where Post Office buildings were built.  The series listed was only negatives ‘A’ through to ‘R’ at this stage.  The Photographic Card index for this series were used to assist in identifying locations, titles and additional metadata of various images [draw two of item 179, R20941574].

This series of negatives appear to be the result of a photographic capturing project undertaken in the early 1960s.  It is made up mainly of images of Post Office and Telegraph buildings all over New Zealand, dating from 1840 through to the early 1980s.  This is a unique collection that depicts the built history of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph over one hundred and forty years.

Some photos are identified as ‘historical’, and are usually copy negatives (photos of prints) taken of photo album prints, or publications, that date from the mid to late 1800s.  There are also many copy negatives of architectural perspective drawings of proposed new Post Office buildings, dating from the late 1940s through to the late 1970s.  Most of the images are exterior shots of finished buildings, with most ‘historical’ images featuring postal staff standing in front of buildings in uniform, and sometimes with messenger bikes.  A few images name the staff featured in the photos, while other images show interior fit-outs and examples of customer service.

The negatives are generally understood to be cellulose acetate, in the following formats (in inches and centimetres): 2 x 2”; 4 x 3”; 4 x 5”, 5 x 7” and 35mm film strips.

Each set of negatives were originally packaged together in wax sleeves, and then housed within a paper envelope. The record number was typed on the envelope. Additional information sometimes was recorded on the envelope also, such as the title, nature of the image (historical/architectural) and the photographer who made the image. This is why most of the negatives date from the late 1950s through to the 1970s, while the content in the photos may date from as early as 1840.

Many images have suffered damage through vinegar syndrome, and have been identified as ‘Damaged’ in the description. The damaged items seem to be either 4 x 3”, 4 x 5” or 5 x 7” in format.
The following items may be considered some highlights of the Places Series:
• Napier Chief Post Office, Historical - Feb 1931, damage caused by earthquake [1/N/19]
• Ratana Pa Post Office (old) [1/R/5]
• Hastings Post Office - Historical – 1912 [1/H/10] – features thee coach services, and has a stamp at the bottom right of the print ‘The Tesla Studios, Heretaunga St’.
• Mangahao Post Office - Historical - 1920 [1/M/29] –a temporary Post Office to facilitate workers on a near by Mangahao Power Station during its construction between 1919 and 1924.
• Putaruru Post Office [1/P/28] – a circular building with vaulted roofs, 1970s design.

The films and videos in this collection are of instructional and publicity nature, which were intended for internal training and showing NZ Post history. Most films were made by National Film Unit for NZ Post and some were to be purchased elsewhere. The videos appear to be mostly focused on internal instructional and informational matters. The videos generally date from a later period than the films.

There are 28 reels of microfilm (16mm and 35mm) of establishment registers, staff records, date stamp impressions, early South Island telegraph, date of openings of telephone exchanges, inland mail etc.

Establishment registers, indexes and nominal rolls in this series provide valuable material for genealogical research as well as evidence of the structure of the early Post Office, while mail service registers contain the listing for each area of the service, the frequency, mode of conveyance, name of contractor, subsidy amount, and date of termination of contract.

There are also wide range of publications within this series, such as Post Office official circulars, promotional material, postal history publications and departmental manuals.

There are some registered files, not all the files are from the same numbering sequence, as some are from the branches, others are from the POHQ prefix sequence. A range of subjects are covered.
