	The design approval files document a safety inspection function carried out since 1874 by a succession of departments [see documentation for 6414 for those which pre-date this series]. Boilers, lifts and cranes, as well as pressure vessels and other equipment defined in statute, had to have their plans inspected for adherence to New Zealand safety standards. Once approved by engineer surveyors, a certificate of compliance would be issued, and a copy of the plans retained on file to document the prior approval of the design, should other units be imported or built. The file could represent any number of units of a particular design, and so are not necessarily useful for tracing individual machines; although any alterations or significant repairs would require approval and be added to the file.

	

	Most of this series consists of thin files with initial correspondence on compliance, and a copy of the plan provided.  Another copy would be forwarded to the district office for use in the regular inspections necessary to obtain an operating certificate.  Inspections are documented in the boiler registers.

	

	The registers of these files have been lost since about 1974, so it is not completely clear how the numbers were allocated; there are many files with duplicated numbers, although the designs are unrelated. The second number may have represented a register page. There appears to be no extant index.

	

	Each machine would also be issued with an 'official number' [ON] by the district office, which was the key to particular units. These numbers were recorded in the boiler registers [6414].  If the ON is known, the file number should be annotated in the register (although this seems often to have been omitted).  If only the district and the period is known, the register for the region can be scanned.  If the file reference is not shown, the list of files for that year can be checked.  When the ON is known, it can also be checked against the aperture card list [see series 7032] to see if it is noted as having been microfilmed.

	

	When examined in the Ministry of Transport store in Rainger House, Newtown, this series had become completely disordered at both file and box level.  A handwritten list from the early 1980s reflected this order.  This list was entered into a database and sorted into file order, which indicates only the box in which a file is held and still requires a search of that box.  In order that the boxing and typing could be independent, the files were reboxed with the same box numbers; it was then found that about 60 boxes were missing.  Marine & Industrial have said that these files have been microfilmed and would be held in the aperture card sequence at Archives New Zealand, Christchurch Regional Office.  If a file's ON is known, the ON/aperture card cross reference list can be checked [series 7032]; however, this does not record a substantial number of early ONs. Any file microfilmed will require Ministry of Transport permission to view [until 2035].

	

	A small group of these files was retained by Marine & Industrial to be transferred at a later date.
