	This series of civil files incorporates all civil files lodged in the Christchurch High Court. The file number for these civil files is allocated sequentially for Christchurch and covers all civil proceedings in the order that they are received.  The Court identifier (409) means it is the Christchurch court.

	Probate files contain all the legal documentation required for the granting of probate on a will i.e. the legal administration of an estate.  Therefore, most files contain a copy of the deceased person’s will or details of their estate.  Not everyone who made a will had a probate file; the size of the estate seemed to be the determining factor in whether wills go to probate.

	Action files (more recently called Civil Proceedings) are civil cases in which a person, or body sues someone else in Court. The files comprise documents admitted as evidence, in addition to testimony and judgement.

	The Christchurch High Court have only transferred probate files from this series thus far, for the years 2003-2013. From June 2013 all applications for probate have been filed at the Wellington High Court.
