	The Women's Suffrage Petition [Te Petihana Whakamana Poti Wahine] is a treasured national document. The Petition is on UNESCO’s International Memory of the World Register and is formally recognised on the inaugural UNESCO New Zealand Memory of the World Register. 

	In 1893 New Zealand was the first country in the world where women won the right to vote in national elections. The suffrage movement was this country’s first truly mass movement – mobilising tens of thousands of New Zealanders with rallies and generating a series of massive petitions.

	The petition was signed by over 31,000 New Zealanders. Nearly 24,000 of those signatures have survived on the copy of the petition presented to Parliament.

	The original petition roll was listed in the list of LE1 [Archives Reference: AEBE 18507 LE1 ] with Archway item code R17687659, and is on display in the Constitution Room along with the nation’s founding document, the 1840 Tiriti o Waitangi.

	To faciliate wider access to this significant document, Archives New Zealand digitised the roll into 554 sheets, ingested them into the Archive's digital repository, and also listed the individual names on each sheet to make them searchable. Users can search the petition roll by name and locate the related sheet number, through the link under the sheet entry. 

	A  duplicate set of digitised sheets have also been reproduced for long term preservation purposes.
