	These trial files were the record of criminal proceedings which took place in the Dunedin Supreme (later High) Court.

	Some files from the late 1850s were labelled with Resident Magistrate's Court, Dunedin, or a combination of Resident Magistrate's and Supreme Court.

	The files contained depositions, witness statements, details of evidence presented, reports of probation officers and the verdict. Later 20th century files often included judge's summing up and sentencing notes.

	Many files (especially from the 1890s) included indictments. Indictments that were kept separately can be found in series 26753.
