	The files in this series contained legal papers relating to divorce hearings held at the New Plymouth High Court. The files were registered with an annual running number, beginning again at 1 each year.

	

	Papers in the files generally included copies of decrees absolute and decrees nisi, copies of affidavits in support of the divorce, and often copies of marriage certificates.

	

	The files were controlled by Registers (Series 6477) which detailed names of parties to the divorce, register number, dates of the different stages of the proceedings, and dates of grant of decree nisi and decree absolute.

	

	Under the Family Proceedings Act 1980, responsibility for divorce proceedings was transferred to the newly created Family Court from 1981.

	Dissolution of Marriage or Civil Union Records

	Under both High Court Rules and Family Court Rules, former parties to a marriage or a civil union have an unrestricted right to obtain a copy of the order dissolving the marriage or civil union. These dissolution orders can be viewed at, or copies obtained from Archives New Zealand on production of sufficient proof of identity (photo identification e.g. passport/drivers’ license).

	For all others requiring access  :

	Restricted 100 years from last date on file.

	Please note: additional rules regarding copying and publication etc. may be imposed by the relevant court or the Ministry of Justice at the time of granting access to restricted records.
