The Town and Country Planning Act 1953 provided for the setting up of an appeal board. The board had four members: a barrister, who was to be chairman; a representative of the Municipal Association; a representative from the New Zealand Counties Association and another appointed by the Governor. The board had the status of a standing commission of enquiry and had quasi judicial power to hear and make decisions on appeals against planning schemes.
There are two sequences of records in this series: The first sequence dates from 1953-1958 and does not include an item description. These case files have two numbers, a record number (with a 2/- or 3/- prefix) and an yearly appeal number (for example, 1/1953). The second sequence contains files dating from 1954-1964 and these have the prefix 151 followed by a running number. (These files were presumably part of a larger file classification system.) 
File content includes notice of appeal together with the case of the appellant, the respondent's reply, notice of a hearing and the decisions of the board.
