	Blenheim probates pre-1876: Pre 1876 Blenheim probates can either be found in the Wellington [AAOM] or Nelson High Courts [AAOO]. Post 1876, the majority of Blenheim wills would have been probated at the Blenheim High Court. However some may still have been probated at Nelson or Wellington. Legislation: The Wills Act (UK) 1837 was the legal basis for the probating of wills in New Zealand. Subsequent amendments were passed but did not change the tenure of the Act. The first New Zealand amendment to the Act was passed in 1955.

	 These files document probate cases heard at the Blenheim High/Supreme Court for the Marlborough area. The records are arranged by a running number allocated as each case was filed to be heard. This series was closed following a change from a running number classification to an annual single number sequence in 1972. This new sequence can be found in Series 17544. A controlling set of registers for these files can be found in Series 17545.

	Probate files contained all the legal information required for the granting of probate on a will – so usually included a copy of the deceased person's will. Not everyone who made a will has a probate file.  If a person died without making a will, then there might be a file of Letters of Administration, containing the legal documentation required to administer the deceased person's estate. A person's will was usually probated through the High Court nearest to where they were living before their death. A person might be registered more than once.
