The Magnetic Survey was established in 1901 as a programme administered by the Department of Lands and Survey. From 1899, under Professor Coleridge Farr of the Department of Lands and Survey, a systematic magnetic survey was conducted in New Zealand based on reading from 300 magnetic stations across the country. In Christchurch, by 1900, work had started on a magnetograph cellar and the absolute magnetic house. Professor Farr was informed that if the instruments were not ready in time for Scott's visit in 1901, in preparation for his first Antarctic voyage of exploration, Scott would leave from Melbourne instead - where an existing observatory had already been set up. In 1902 the Magnetic Observatory was opened in the Botanic Gardens in Christchurch. In 1931 the Magnetic Survey Office became part of the recently established Department of Scientific and Industrial Research [DSIR], amidst some controversy. This controversy continued into the 1940's as the director fought against the loss of responsibilities to other parts of the DSIR. 



The Magnetic Observatory in Christchurch shifted to Amberley in 1928 because of interference from trams and electric activity in the city. The Observatory also received data from a number of observatories overseas including Scott Base. 
By the 1940s, Magnetic Survey Office's main purpose was to organise the wartime magnetic survey of New Zealand. The office also received seismological data, climatological data, data on cosmic radiation, and ionosphere data. Wartime demands for improved magnetic and ionosphere information encouraged geophysical work throughout the research community. However as responsibilities for the research overlapped it was decided to establish a Geophysics Section within DSIR. This was done in 1951 and the Magnetic Survey Office became part of the new Geophysics Division.



The Magnetic Survey Office in Christchurch closed in 1969 and the observatory function and records passed entirely to the Geophysical Observatory.
